Barack Obama and his father, also named Barack Obama. Obama's father left the family to study at Harvard when Barack was just 2, returning only once. Obama wrote poignantly about this visit in his memoir, remembering the basketball his father gave him, the African records they danced to, the Dave Brubeck concert they attended. Obama, then 10, never saw his father again.

I have a dream.

« I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed : “We hold these truths to be self-evident : that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right down in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain and the crooked places will be made straight and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together. »

Je rêve que mes quatre jeunes enfants vivront un jour dans une nation où ils ne seront pas jugés sur la couleur de leur peau, mais sur la valeur de leur caractère^[3]. Je rêve aujourd'hui^[3] !

Je rêve qu'un jour, dans l'Alabama, avec ses abominables racistes, avec son gouverneur qui n'a aux lèvres que les mots d'"opposition" aux lois fédérales et d'"annulation" de ces lois, que là même en Alabama un jour les petits garçons noirs et les petites filles noires avec les petits garçons blancs et les petites filles blanches pourront se donner la main, comme sœurs et frères^[3].

Je rêve aujourd'hui^[3].

Je rêve qu'un jour toute vallée sera élevée, toute colline et toute montagne seront abaissées^[3]. Les endroits raboteux seront aplanis et les chemins tortueux redressés^[3]. Et la gloire du Seigneur soit révélée et toute chair la verra^[3].»

Anti-racisme

"Be it racism, homophobia or whatever else, all forms of intolerance are an affront to human dignity. That's why Brazil, the US & UNESCO launched today an int'l program to teach "Respect for All" in schools. The 1st step to global peace is learning to respect each other, above our differences, and the value we ALL bring to our communities. As US President Obama said, “Whenever I find myself feeling doubtful or cynical, what gives me the most hope is the next generation - the young people whose attitudes and beliefs and openness to change have already made history.” Que ce soit, le racisme, l'homophobie ou quoi, toutes les formes d'intolérance constituent un affront à la dignité humaine. C'est pourquoi au Brésil, les Etats-Unis, & l'UNESCO a lancé aujourd'hui un programme int ' l à enseigner « Respect pour tous » dans les écoles. La 1ère étape pour la paix mondiale est d'apprendre à respecter les uns les autres, au-dessus de nos différences et la valeur nous tous apportent à nos collectivités. Comme nous le président Obama dit, « Chaque fois que je me sentant douteux ou cyniques, ce qui me donne de l'espoir la plupart est la prochaine génération - les jeunes dont les attitudes et croyances et ouverture au changement ont déjà apporté à l'histoire."
